The Project
AMALGAM planned the gut renovation for the studio apartment of two of its principles in the UWS of Manhattan. Do to the limited space each aspect of the project was extensively studied in both drawing and rendered formats. The end result fits like a glove or - as the saying goes -golden handcuffs.
The Approach
All walls and finishes were removed before the design was finalized so that all risers and utilities could be accounted for. A small walk in closet was turned into a gracious shower. Each remaining wall was turned into a storage-wall with custom cabinetry which accommodate coat and clothes closets, a murphy bed, kitchen and pantry storage and book shelves. Overall it's more storage than either resident has ever had in a new york apartment despite the small footprint of the space.
The Material
The final material selection was rift sawn white oak with a stainless steel backsplash in the kitchen and white satin lacquered cabinetry in the living area - both with caesarstone counters and window sills. The existing oak floor was refinished. The bathroom is covered in penny tile with a white wood grain marble accent wall.
