The Project
AMALGAM was asked to give a modest beach home in long island some New England flair while adding a dormer to make the newly finished attic space a beautiful master suite and guest bedroom.
The Approach
We studied Cape Cod and historic Shingle Style homes to refine the look for this charming get away. The use of square windows was employed throughout the house to give some historic charm to the new spaces. The new roof dormer on the second floor along with the new jack and jill bath makes the perfect master and guest suite. The fire place mantel was lovingly restored by the owners who took an active role in the project. Large sliders were added to the back of the house to enhance the connection with the back patio and gracious yard.
The Material
White cedar shingles gives the house a fresh and historically sensitive facelift which will be complete when they naturally weather to a soft light gray. Substantial wood moldings and trims cleanly frame the historic look while dark stained oak flooring grounds the interior spaces.
